Hope To Play First Floodlit Fixture
Durham hope to play
their first game under floodlights at Riverside
when they host Derbyshire in July. The club is looking for a sponsor
for the one-day game on Tuesday July 13th to help meet the cost
of the lighting and to attract Sky TV coverage.
Mike Candlish says: "It would be a great occasion and would
come right in the middle of the summer just before the school holidays,
so we would be hoping for a bumper family crowd." Durham, who
enjoyed their best season so far last year, are hoping to build
on that success to attract a larger and younger following.
This year's poor
summer played havoc with crowds across the country but Durham are
hoping for better luck when the Riverside hosts two World Cup games
towards the end of May. Pakistan against Scotland will be played
on Thursday May 20th and Australia against Bangladesh the following
Thursday. The County side will play both Scotland and Pakistan in
warm up games earlier in the month.
Durham will face
attractive international opposition in Sri Lanka "A" on
Monday July 26th. Sri Lanka the current World One day champions
and are expected to include some exciting players.
There is also the
prospect of a match against New Zealand on Monday June 7th providing
the Kiwis fail to qualify for the Super Stage of the World Cup.
All of Durham's
home games next season will be at Riverside with the exception of
the four day County game against Kent which will be played at Stockton
Cricket Club in partnership with Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council.
Worcester will provide
the opposition for the first home County Championship game starting
on Tuesday April 13th.
Riverside will also
host the four day International between England Under 19's, which
could include some Durham players, and Australia Under 19's starting
on Wednesday September 1st.
