Building Society Staff Go Out To Bat

Universal Building Society workers are being given a crash course in how to play cricket at Durham's Riverside on Wednesday May 22.

The staff have volunteered to run a series of Kwik Cricket competitions across the North East…but first they are being taught how to bat and bowl themselves. They'll also take part in a match after being taught the basics of the game by Durham Cricket development Officer Nick Brown.

The Universal Building Society is sponsoring Durham Cricket Board's Kwik Cricket Festival. The sponsorship has been matched pound for pound by government agency Sportsmatch.

It's a unique partnership because two members of UBS staff will run each festival and will be involved in scoring, umpiring, collecting results, directing teams and presentations of prizes. There are 26 Kwik Cricket Festivals throughout June and July from Northumberland and Durham.

The festivals give children and schools the opportunity to play cricket in a friendly, organised situation against other schools from their districts.

Nick Brown, Cricket Development Officer, said: "This is an exciting example of corporate volunteering, which enables Universal Building Society to contribute to the communities in Northumberland and Durham."
