Durham Begin Love Affair

Australian batsman Martin Love will be Durham's overseas professional for the coming season. The 26 year old has signed a one year contract following the news that fellow Australian Simon Katich will not be returning to Durham in order for him to be fully rested in time for the Ashes Tour should he be picked.

The Western Australian batsman made many friends at the Riverside last season and is currently playing in Australia. Simon found that 18 months of cricket at First Class level hard work and feels that his body would benefit from some rest and remedial work which will assist him in realising his ambition of playing for Australia this summer on their tour of England.

His replacement is an exciting right handed batsman "No 3" from Queensland and will be joining Durham for the start of the season.

First Team Coach Martyn Moxon says he is delighted to be able to sign Love: "I've heard nothing but good reports about Martin and his career record in Australia is outstanding, by all accounts we have a very talented player coming to join us."

Love has scored over 6,000 first-class runs including 17 centuries in Australia at an average of 44, his highest score being 228.

Chairman Bill Midgley says "Martin is more than capable of filling Simons' shoes and we are thrilled that he has agreed to join us. The fact that Simon can not return to Durham this year is extremely disappointing because he was a great ambassador for the Club both on and off the field and he will be missed by all.

"We hope that we will still see Simon in the summer as a member of the Ashes touring party. As a result of not joining Durham, Simon will have the opportunity of resting between the end of the Australian season and the start of the Ashes Tour, should he be picked.

Simon Katich says: "Sadly I have recently decided that I will not be available to join Durham for the coming season. It was a hard decision as I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in the area last year and was looking forward to helping Durham move forward again.

"My first aim is to make the Ashes Tour and my second aim is to make sure that I am fit to play in the next Australian season.

I've found 18 months of cricket at First Class level hard work and I feel my body would benefit from some rest and remedial work.

"If my commitments allow I would love to return to Durham in order to help them fulfil their ambitions."
