Durham Announces Squad for 2002

Three Durham Academy players and Australian born Ashley Thorpe have been offered full contracts for next season as the club seeks to build on the success of gaining promotion to the Norwich Union League First Division. At the same time two of the club's most experienced professionals whose contracts have come to an end have been released.

Batsman and former captain Nick Speak and wicketkeeper Martin Speight have played more than 120 matches between them for Durham. Geoff Cook, Director of Cricket says: "Both Nick and Martin have played a very important part in the Club's transition into an experienced side, their help with the development of Durham's young side has been invaluable over the years."

The three academy players who will join the first team squad next season are Gordon Muchall, an 18 year old batsman from Newcastle, Phil Mustard, also 18, who is wicketkeeper and from Sunderland, and 20 year year old Christopher Mann from South Shields who is an all rounder.

Australian born Ashley Thorpe (26) who plays for Chester-le-Street in the North East Premier League has signed a professional contract for the County. Ashley scored 138 and 85 on debut for the County 2nd XI against Yorkshire.

The club is also hopeful that overseas player Martin Love, who was this season's top scorer with more than 1300 runs, will return for next season.
