Phillips Signs For Durham

Durham have signed Nick Phillips, the right arm off break bowler, from Sussex. The 23 year old has played 19 First Class matches in his career and is regarded as a developing talent by Durham first team coach Norman Gifford, the former England spinner. He said: "Nick is a promising young bowler who can really turn the ball and he also fields well. "We think he will add strength to our existing bowlers and make a positive contribution to the squad." Phillips, who is 5ft 11 inches tall, was born in Pembury in Kent. In his First Class career he has scored 450 runs at an average of 28.12 with a highest score of 53 against Young Australia in 1995. He has taken 27 wickets with a Championship best of 3 for 78 against Lancashire in 1995. Ironically he took 7 for 66 when playing for Sussex II's against Durham II's at Hove last April and helped his side to a 10 wicket victory. Phillips says: "I am delighted to be joining such a forward thinking club. My ambition is to play the highest level and I feel the people involved at Durham can help me achieve that."
